In Loving Memory of

Mrs. Ermina May Bender (nee Humpries)

January 31, 1933 – August 28, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family announces that Garnet Ermina (Mina) May Bender passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, after a lengthy hospital stay.  She was 86 years old. 

Born in Matheson, Ontario, to Evangeline and Leslie Humphries, Mina was the eldest sister to brother Jim, and sisters Irene (Siltala), Nora (Swanepoel), and Mary (Duguay).  

She raised 4 children, Bob, Terry, Jean, and Judy Montague, on a shoestring and with an enormous bounty of courage, immense pride, and fierce capacity for love.   She greatly loved and adored her seven grandchildren, Taryn, Sara, Tyler, Emily, Alain, Mark, and Jillian. 

Mina gave of herself without asking for anything in return.  She was a dedicated fund raiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. She followed in her mother’s footsteps and was an active member of the Women’s Institute for many years.  Mina was a teacher; she shared her knowledge and passion for sewing, quilting, and homemaking to young women in the 4H Clubs; she taught kulatuk making (Eskimo parkas) at Northern College.   

Mina never had an idle hand; she enjoyed so many pastimes that included sewing, painting, and playing her piano.  Mina was an avid artist in her own right.  Her love of the mountains of British Columbia and the landscapes she saw during her travels across Canada are forever captured in her beautiful paintings. 

Mina’s family will lay her to rest at the cemetery in Shillington in a private ceremony at a later time.  There will be no funeral service. 

We will forever be grateful for the care and compassion provided by the staff and nurses at Bingham Memorial Hospital, Anson General Hospital, and Dr. Boettcher. 

In lieu of flowers and donations, the family has a simple request.  Take a few minutes now and then to drop by to visit the elderly whether they are in hospital or a nursing home.  At the end of life, people need company more than anything.  A simple hello leaves a life-long memory.

Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Irvine & Irvine Funeral Home & Northern Crematorium.
