Carl Cowell Obituary

In loving memory of

Mr. Carl Francis Cowell

July 31st, 1940 – July 1st, 2026

It is with heavy hearts, but with deep gratitude for his life; his family announces the passing of Carl Francis Cowell surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday July 1st, 2026 at the age of 85, at Anson General Hospital in Iroquois Falls.

Carl was born on July 31st 1940 and was the son of the late Frank Leonard and Ruby May (nee Waldren) Cowell. He was the 5th child of seven siblings and was part of a very close-knit family. He is predeceased by his older brother Norman Cowell and Donald Cowell, his older sister Eva (Munroe) Burton, and his younger brother Charlie (Donnally) Cowell. He will be greatly missed by his sisters Carrie (Charlie – predeceased) Sutton, and Cora (Norm) Bilodeau, and sisters-in-law’s Nan (Norman - predeceased) Cowell and Diane (Donald - predeceased) Cowell. We express our deepest gratitude for all family and friends who steadfastly visited and cared for him throughout his life. Carl will be greatly missed by his extended family, friends, neighbours, and community.

Carl was a devoted husband predeceased by his loving wife of 18 years Yvonne Cowell (nee Tremblay); whom he devoted his love and life too.

He will be deeply missed by his son Francis Cowell and daughter Sarah (Tim) Ford; son Dave (Mary) Perratt, son Douglas Perratt, daughter Wanita (Jason) Clyde. He was a devoted Grandpa to his grandchildren; Bennett, Sophie, Audrey, Eyvonne, Rachel, Lindsay, Lisa, Ashley, Logan, Caleb, Liam, Payton, Paige, and Landyn – and rarely missed sending a birthday greeting.

Carl was a gentle giant, a caring and kind soul who devoted his life to serving his family and community. Carl completed 31 years of service as a correctional officer at Monteith Correctional Complex. (July 10th, 1967 – March 31st, 1999.) Carl also volunteered with the St. Andrew’s United Church, and many events in the community such as the Matheson Fall Fair. Most importantly he always put the needs of his family first – his greatest wish was for his children to have fulfilling lives. From a young age, he devoted his time to caring for the Cowell Family Homestead. Carl loved his dogs, farm animals, blueberry and rhubarb picking, baking his muffins, and spending summer days at the cottage. Carl will be remembered for his kind heart, devotion to his family and unwavering support and care that he showed others.

The family would like to extend our thanks to the staff at Bingham Memorial Hospital, the compassionate Nurses at South Centennial Manor, and Dr. Bruno at Anson General Hospital for helping him through difficult times when he was no longer able to live at the family farm in Matheson that he cherished so much.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday July 7th from 6pm-8pm and Wednesday July 8th from 10am-11am; Funeral service to follow at St. Andrew’s United Church, 452 5th Street Matheson, Ontario. Following the service, Interment will take place at the Lakeside Cemetery with reception to be held in the St. Andrew’s United Church Hall.

If desired the family welcomes donations to the South Centennial Manor redevelopment fundraiser, or a charity of your choice.
