Helen McWhirter Obituary

Helen Margaret McWhirter
(nee Cashaback)
October 31, 1930 - June 30, 2025

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Helen Margaret McWhirter.

She was an amazing woman - wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She lived life to the fullest and determined to do it on her own despite her decreased mobility over the years. Family meant more to her than life itself and she was determined to cling to that throughout her life.

She was a long time active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 89 Ladies Auxiliary for 72 years and truly missed her volunteering and the camaraderie due to declining health.

As with most people in their later years the one thing she truly missed was her friends. As time went on they became less and less to almost non-existent but she cherished each and everyone of them. In spite of all of this however she pushed forward, always remembering the good times.

She always loved the kitchen. Undoubtedly, her favourite spot in the house. She loved to cook and was excellent at it. If there was a downfall here it was her knack to cook far too much. She was an excellent hostess and aimed to put a smile on the face of anyone she fed. You can be assured that no-one would ever leave hungry - quite the opposite.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Bronson McWhirter (1985), her parents Leo and Francis Cashaback, her siblings Johnny (Leda), Mike, Walter, Ambrose and Edward. Many may not know this, but Mom lost a daughter to crib death who she referred to as her little Angel. Now they are united.

She is survived by her four children Beverley (John) Rogers, Tom (Louise), Jim (Marielle) and Betty-Anne (Baird) Widmeyer and loving friend, Denise Lupien. Her cherished grandchildren, Jason (Karla), Scott (Corry), Ben, Karl, TJ, Mallory, Tegan, Morgan, Chantal(Remi), Natalie(Kris)  and great-grand children, Audrey, Jack, Forrest, Whitney, Bronson, Marin, Oliver, Jasper, Vinson, Jace and a little one on the way.

Helen is survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and her sister-in-law, Alice Pesklevy.

Visitations will be on Monday, July 7, 2025 starting at 10 am at the Irvine & Irvine funeral home, 70 Seventh Ave. South in Cochrane, ON.

The funeral service will follow in our funeral home chapel starting at 11 am.

Helen will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Cochrane Civic Cemetery.

A special thank you to Dr. Ross, Christiane Bergeron and the nursing staff at Lady Minto Hospital. A special thank you to the wonderful home care workers that cared for mom over the years. Your help and care allowed her to remain in the home she was born in. Thank you Tracey for the special care and friendship you gave our mother.
