Rick Chartier
Nov 20, 1951 - May 11, 2024
We greatly deplore his loss.
These words, inscribed on an iron Scottish grave marker in the New Post cemetery on the Abitibi River, describe the feelings of those who loved Rick: his wife Elaine, his cherished sons Justan (Sonya-Lee) and Alec. He was the son of Annie Klotz and Lucien Chartier, both deceased. He loved his relatives in the Lemieux, Chartier, Klotz, Lemelin and Daigneault families.
A curious mind, an interest in history, in Aboriginal peoples and a passion for canoeing led Rick to create Coureur de Bois Adventures. The love for his family was at the forefront of all his decisions and he was very present and loving with his sons and favourite daughter-in-law. He was creative and funny, a lover of animals and nature, a skilled carpenter who built two great family homes, a writer of the most challenging hints to the gifts he gave. He was also a very good friend. He made great hamburgers but was mostly a terrible cook and he absolutely could not carry a tune.
Rick found peace paddling his canoe on Chapman Lake or on any body of water. His paddling was strong, silent, elegant and beautiful. The broadcaster Shelagh Rogers once said that “all canoers are dreamers to a degree.” Our dearest Rick, may your dreams never end, may your waters be still.
Final arrangements are private as per his wishes.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Community Living Timmins and would be greatly appreciated.
