Robert Hopkins Obituary

Robert Dale Hopkins
April 16, 1945 – November 12, 2025

There are some people whose presence never has to be loud to be felt.
Robert Dale Hopkins (aka “Bob, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Bob”) was one of those rare men, steady as a river he loved, practical as the tools he kept in his garage, and gentle in a way that made everyone around him breathe a little easier.

Robert Dale Hopkins of Nellie Lake, Iroquois Falls, passed away at home, as per his wishes, on November 12, 2025, surrounded by love. Robert was raised in Porquis and spent most of his life shaped by the north, the Abitibi River, and the farm country roads he knew as well as his jean pocket where he always carried his Swiss Army knife. He started out as a milkman and spent the heart of his working life on the Pipeline, the kind of hands-on, honest work that let him see the country and suited his love for the outdoors.

His garage was his kingdom: a lifetime’s collection of tools and saved “pieces” that looked like chaos to everyone but him. He knew where every bolt and bracket belonged, and you’d better believe you didn’t touch his classic swimsuit calendar. He greeted neighbours and friends with his usual “How she go?” and he meant it, he genuinely cared. And if you needed something fixed or borrowed, he was already halfway to the garage before you finished the sentence.

Bob kept a meticulous calendar of birthdays and dates stretching back years; he remembered the details that mattered. But more than anything, he remembered people, exactly as they were. His greatest gift was making others feel safe to be themselves. He spoke few words, but the ones he chose were steady: “Every day’s a good day,” and “There’s no bad weather, just go outside.”

He passed on his love of the being out in nature, hunting, fishing, and the quiet of the lakeside and warm fire to his grandson Matt, and he was proud to welcome the next generation with his great-granddaughter Aynslee. Some of his happiest moments were simple ones: watching his wife Pierrette work on puzzles at the dining room table, sharing a glass of wine with his daughter Tanea, enjoying a 5 o’clock beer with friends, or letting country music play from an old radio while making sure he was ready to put an extra log on the fire.

During his extended illness, Robert was lovingly cared for at home by his wife Pierrette, a quiet devotion he deeply appreciated. Her presence allowed him to remain where he was most at peace, surrounded by the life and routine they built together.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Walter Hopkins, and by his infant son Dana. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Pierrette (née Lagacé); his daughter, Tanea (Marc Fortin); his grandson Matt (Montana); and great-granddaughter Aynslee. He is also survived by his brothers Wally and Brian, and dear friends Gary and Ron who were like brothers. Around him also were lifelong friend Suzanne and neighbours who long ago became family. His final hours were held with care by his nieces Natalie and Tysh, who were nearby when it mattered most.

If you met Robert only once, you remembered the calm. If you knew him well, you understood the depth beneath it. He believed that a gentle presence and warm smile could be a powerful one, and that honouring people exactly as they are brings more joy than judgment ever could. He lived that truth every day.

In the spirit of his own words, we hold onto this:
Every day can be a good day…. and we were lucky to have so many of ours with him.

A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at a later date, when family and friends can gather to share stories and memories.
