Obituary

It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Ronald Bruce at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital of Ottawa just 3 weeks short of his 96th birthday.

Ron was born in Bengough, Saskatchewan to Mary Campbell and Eli Bruce.  In 1934, when Ron was eight years old, Mary drove four children across the country in a Model T Ford to Matheson while his father Eli came on the railway with the livestock. The family settled on a farm in Beatty Twp in 1937.

Ron married the love of his life, Cecilia Bondarenko in Aug 1948 and raised 6 children. As a young man Ron worked on the farm, at a lumber camp/ sawmill, Moose Crossing and at  Inco in Sudbury. Most of his working career was at Johns Manville Asbestos Mine in Matheson (1950-1963) and then at Adams Mine in Kirkland Lake as a Maintenance foreman until his retirement in 1985. Ron remained in his home in Matheson until 2019 when he moved to Thorncliffe Retirement Residence in Bells Corners Ottawa

Ron was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed many activities including hunting, fishing, making maple syrup, tending his vegetable gardens, cutting wood and making his own beer, to name just a few. He was Grandpa Ron or Grandpa Popsicle to many, related or not, he welcomed them all.  He loved spending the summers at the Munro Lake cottage and was especially happy when the extended family and friends got together and there was a gaggle of kids running around. The more the merrier!  He was first up in the morning, putting the fire on and making coffee. His homemade bread and blueberry pancakes were legendary. He always made sure that there was gas in Big Red and the Pontoon boat and the sauna was hot! His freezer was always full of unlimited frozen treats, available to all, no matter the time of day,  cottage rules !

Ron was pre-deceased by his wife of over 56 years, Cecilia (nee Bondarenko 2004), brothers Gordon (2010) and Boyd (2009), sisters Agnes Irene (1921)  Phyllis (2000), grandson Joshua (1993) and daughter-in-law Gwen (2019). He  is survived by his children Jim, Brian , Doug (Carole), Wendy (Bruce), Mike (Lorraine) and Janice (Peter),  16 grandchildren Carolynne, James, Ronnie, Lindsay, Eli, Mitchell, Natacha, Dominique, Christopher, Sarah, Michael , Nicolas, Jeremy, Hannah, Rae-Anne and Laura,  and 24 great grandchildren Tyler, Valeri, Justin, Hilary, Sydney, Adrien, Abigayle, Brendan, Mackenzie, Kira , Ashlyn, Roy, Ari, Adalyn, Nicole, Kyle, Luke, Sebastian,  Etta, Xavier, Genevieve, Leela, Molly and Madeline.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday July 28th, 2022 at 11 am at St. Andrew's United Church 5th Avenue, Matheson, Ontario followed by the interment at the Lakeside Cemetery.
